Ontology Modelling Approach and Guidelines Related to the ISO Standard
To ensure consistent ontology development and focus on the relevant parts, the following general approach is followed:
Guidelines
Concepts defined in the ISO IDMP Standards should to be covered by the Ontology
The ISO IDMP standards are the authoritative source and as far as possible concepts defined in the standard should be explicitly represented also in the IDMP Ontology. In case of issues that have led to confusion or where we need entirely different modelling patterns, we may deviate after conversation with ISO IDMP authors.
Examples:
"moiety role" as a concept in the standard is also expressed in the ontology
Allowed values for expressing stereochemistry need to be included in the ontology
single substance is mentioned in the standard and for completenes included in the ontology
If required, additional concepts can be defined
The IDMP Ontology needs to answer competency questions with data. Most of the concepts required for this are defined in the ISO standard and should be taken from there. If however we detect issues with concept defitions or missing concepts, then these can be defined in the IDMP Ontology or imported Commons Ontology modules.
