Business' relevance

This competency question is addressing the question to identify the targeted Manufactured Items in which a defined Substance is used. With the recent questioning about Titanium Dioxide (E171) as a food additive, the EMA has been evaluating the possibility to replace Titanium Dioxide in all the EU-registered products that would contain some. As a consequence, a report on all impacted products as been requested to pharma industries. The complexity of the manufacturing process and the different levels where such excipient could be added (e.g., in the tablet coating as a light/UV protector, in the capsule mass as an opacifier, in an ink pre-mix as a white colorant...) makes it difficult for the industry to have a comprehensive overview of the usage of a specific substance across the entire portfolio. Also, in case of a stock out of material, rapidly identifying the impacted products would be of great help to take the necessary measures and avoid medicinal product disruption on the market.
