Statistics Canada Census Information

Census metropolitan areas (CMAs) and census agglomerations (CAs) would be useful since economic data is published for them sometimes. Here are links to the two Standard Geographical Classification variants that list CMAs and CAs:

Statistical Area Classification - Variant of SGC 2011

Statistical Area Classification by Province and Territory - Variant of SGC 2011

By the same token, the census division (CD) level could be useful (the level below the Province/territory level in the Standard Geographical Classification or possibly, level 3 of the Economic Regions - Variant of SGC 2011.

A key area that uses the Standard Geographical Classification is the Canadian System of National Accounts, so this would also tie in well with the IND, given this areas role in generating GDP.  They use this classification for the provinces and sub-national as well.  For industrial classification (entities), StatCan is anchored in NAICS standard as well as the SNA institutional units – there is a new standard now CCIUS on our standards website that shows the categories for financial institutions specifically.

If you go to these sites and click on a code, it’ll then display sub-codes within the structure that you can keep expanding with a click to get to the levels mentioned above.

Finally, it seems as though the ISO has been updated from what you sent me, so in case you are using this for other jurisdictions you might need to refer to the new standard.  We noticed that 10 now shows as “Newfoundland and Labrador”, not just “Newfoundland”, for example, and “Yukon Territory” was updated a while back to “Yukon”. (Note potential revisions required for LCC.)
