Proceedings:
Today we spent time looking at where things stand after the Q4 release. There are 14 outstanding JIRA issues that involve DER, and one additional outstanding issue in github regarding our ability to represent futures contracts.
Some of these are small, related to definitions, which we should be able to tackle relatively quickly. Others will require more work, such as working our way through forwards and options. We spent some time talking about spots, for example, since we have only tiny ontologies covering spot contracts. Some definitions that John found:
The spot market is where financial instruments, such as commodities, currencies and securities, are traded for immediate delivery. Delivery is the exchange of cash for the financial instrument. A futures contract, on the other hand, is based on the delivery of the underlying asset at a future date.
A spot commodity is a commodity that is traded on its cash market as opposed to a derivatives market. Spot markets are those in which the transactions are settled within just a few days. Market participants often use a combination of spot and futures markets for trading commodities, as hedgers or as speculators.
For next week - both John Nowlin and John Gemski are gathering definitions for us and John Nowlin and Pete will be working on examples we can use to test both what we already have with respect to coverage and to find gaps.
